Inside the braided basket, the box is still.

Box within a box within a box

each painted, inlaid with pearled

abalone shell and whalebone.

Lifting the Moon netting,

the woman shakes out fringes

of deer hooves and puffin beaks.

She tosses the Moon

to her wild-eyed son.

He balances the milky sphere

between crooked lips.

The Moon is a plaything

in the hands of a child.

When he cries, pointing

to the boarded smoke hole,

she opens it. Like black water,

Night falls into her hands

spilling into the corners

of her lodge. Her son sings,

pulling feathers from under his skin,

shaking out wings, blue-black, strong.

With Moon in his bill, Raven flies out,

flinging it past his curving wings,

far up into the sky.
